Photography doesn't come easy to me, but I keep trying. I rarely know what the result will be before I release the shutter. I sometimes don't understand the result afterwards either.

Morning Walks :

We take a two plus mile walk at least three times a week. In the five years that we have lived in this town, only one time have I walked without my camera. I don't always use it but a camera is always along with me when I leave the house.

Fuji F31 and F70 Test shots : It was dark when I left the house for our morning walk. I took two cameras along ... the FujiFilm F31fd and the FujiFilm F70EXR.

The images from each camera alternate one behind the other in this gallery. In other words, a F31fd photo will be followed immediately by the same photo taken by the F70EXR. The camera that took the photo will be named in each caption.

We were out to get some exercise, so these shots were all taken while we were on the move, Lomography style. Therefore, there are many clarity and exposure issues that would not be there if I was not hurrying the shots. Both cameras were set at EV-1/3 and Auto 800 ISO. (F31 M mode... F70 P mode) They were center metered except for the first two shots. I tried to get comparable exposures for each camera but that didn't always happen in my haste. I shold have adjusted the EV up some since there were very few highlights to worry about blowing away, but I didn't. (... and YES, I do realize that some of my horizons are not level)

The EXIF data should be intact. I notice now that the time on the F31 was about 23 minutes out of sync.

These are out of the camera images with absolutely no processing other than resizing.

Cap Rail Repairs :
Shibumi is as sturdy as a battle tested aircraft carrier, but she is only one hundredth of the size. Two years ago we were cruising in the Exumas when we had to go into a marina for fuel and water. The wind howled from the northeast as we tied up to the dock. I was proud that we got in and secured under those conditons without a whole lot of drama. As I topped off the diesel tanks and Jill filled the water tanks the wind really cranked up. Waves of water came across the marina's slips from Shibumi's starboard beam. The ship rocked back and forth violently. I was not concerned about the pounding we were taking because Shibumi was tied very well. However, little did I know that the relentless oscillation of the boat caused the protective port-side fender to slip. Without the fender in place, Shibumi's cap-rail was hammered repeatedly against the dock piling. That caused ugly gashes in the cap-rail, but it did not affect her solid sea-worthiness. Shibumi traveled with those soulful scars for the past twenty-one months.

Last week I finally scouted out a piece of teak that will be fashioned to replace the gouged-out rail. Work will begin on her this week and Shibumi should be ready to sail before our anticipated February departure date.

New Compass :
Shibumi's new magnetic compass has arrived. The old compass's viewing window was grazed to the stage that the liquid inside was slowly disappearing. I thought about simply having it fixed, however I want to upgrade Shibumi as much as I can, so I replaced the faulty 29 year-old compass with a new one. I will repair the old unit and sell it on eBay.
